1
Pay attention to the name of a new knot you're learning to tie. It's easier to tie a knot if you associate the motions with a specifically-named process. Some names, like the Figure 8 Knot, can also tell you a lot about how to tie the knot or what it looks like.

2
Create a knot board where you attach several small pieces of rope to a board or to hooks on a wall. Label each of the ropes as a certain knot and practice tying each one on a regular basis. Leave the knots tied so that when you walk by the knot board you can look at them and become familiar with what each knot looks like when tied.

3
Learn the common uses for a given knot, especially the applications you will use it for most frequently. Knowing that an overhand knot is a stopper knot, for example, can help you remember when to use it.
-
4
Visualize the knot as you tie it. Fit the motion of the rope into other actions that you understand. For example, you may recall that a certain step of the knot looks like the number 4.
-
5
Invent a narrative to go with the knot. Tell yourself a story in which the steps of tying the knot follow a chronological plot. For example, you may say that one looped piece of rope is a tree with a hole in it, and the end of the rope is a bunny that goes around the tree and through the hole. While it might seem elementary, this technique can be especially helpful when you're learning a brand new knot formation.
-
6
Be neat when you tie knots. Not only is it safer and more reliable to tie a neat knot, but if your knots always look neat it will be easier to remember the steps visually. Loose ends that you're not used to seeing can throw off your visual memory.
-
7
Practice tying the knots with many different types of rope. Use different colors, sizes and textures so that when you need to tie a knot using a certain kind of rope you can more easily recall having done it once before.
