Nylon is an extremely durable material that has many uses, from pantyhose to material for parachutes. In fact, one use is weaving it into a flat mesh called nylon tubular webbing.

    • Nylon tubular webbing, though flat and thin, can be stronger than nylon alone due to its tightly woven characteristic. This gives the material a softer feel to the skin.

    • One particular area that nylon tubular webbing is used in is rock climbing. Since it is less chafing on the skin and can hold weight well, it is used as ropes for climbers. In fact, nylon tubular webbing is designed to break, depending on the strength type, after holding between 1200 and 4000 lbs.

    Considerations

    • Differing from rope, nylon tubular webbing allows a knot to be placed securely, but then is easier to untie. Additionally, it does not unravel like other rope materials, making it a good substitute for normal, everyday cabling.
