How to Score in Dart Throwing

The standard format of darts is the 01 game. This is where two players face each other and take turns throwing three darts and reduce their score from an overall total -- commonly 301 or 501. Knowing how to score throwing darts, therefore, is an integral part of the game. There are a number of practice drills you can use to help boost your ability to score and improve your three-dart scoring average.

Work on your technique, which starts with your stance in front of the board, progresses into your grip on the darts and finishes with your throwing action and release. Aim to first work out a technique which is both comfortable and consistent before attempting to make it as repeatable as possible.

Practice, practice, practice! Put the hours in on a board at home or a local bar to help improve the accuracy and consistency of the technique you have devised. Determine which are your best areas for both scoring and checking out. For example, while many players prefer to score on 20s, as this maximizes their scoring potential, others score on 19s. Furthermore, many right-handed players claim their favorite finish is double 16.

Play fun and development games during your practice. Use Around the World, which can be played individually, in a pair or in a group of up to eight people. Each player must first hit one, then two, then three until they have hit 20, when they must then score either an outer or inner bull's eye -- the first player to achieve this is the winner. Skip either two or three steps if a player scores on a double or triple. For example, if player A is starting the game and hits double one, he would move on to three and move three numbers, to triple four, if he hits triple one.

Bring what you have learned and practiced into match situations. Concentrate on everything you have practiced to help you score as quickly as possible and win dart matches.
