How to Cast Lead Downrigger Weights
If you're going to be angling for big fish in deep waters, you're going to need heavy downrigger weights to keep your trolling lure at the right depth. Downrigger weights are easy to lose and cost money to replace. One economical option is to cast your own weights, using lead ingots, molds and other equipment. If you're going to cast your own, however, it is crucial that you follow proper safety procedures to minimize your exposure to toxic lead fumes.
Things You'll Need
- Well-ventilated work area
- Cast iron pot, 50-pound capacity
- Electrical heat source
- Cast iron ladle
- Downrigger weight mold
- Brass downrigger eyes
- Lead ingots
- Heavy leather gloves
- Safety glasses
- Gate shears
Instructions
-
-
1
Open the mold and place ball eyes in the proper position according to the mold type.
-
2
Place the appropriate amount of lead ingots to match your mold capacity (1 ingot = 1 lb.) into the cast iron pot and heat it to 620 degrees until the lead is entirely molten.
-
3
Close the mold and hold the mold handles in your left hand. Use the cast iron ladle to dip molten lead from the pot and pour it carefully into the opening on the top of the mold. Do this until the level of hot lead reaches to the top of the opening.
-
4
Allow at least an hour for the lead to completely cool, then open the mold and remove the weight.
-
5
Trim excess lead from the weight with shears.
