Salt Water Fishing in Spain

For some time Spain was well known for some of the world's best saltwater fishing. Unfortunately, many of the waters surrounding this country have been fished out. Still, deep-sea fishing makes up a large part of the tourist industry in Spain. Shore fishing is also permitted along the coasts of Spain.

  1. Locations

    • The waters surrounding the Canary Islands are popular for deep-sea fishing, as are the Balearic Islands and Costa Blanca. Costa Brava is popular for rock fishing along the shore.

    Fish

    • Blue marlin, grouper, cod, wahoo, tuna, dolphin, shark, mackerel and big gray mullet are some of the species caught in Spanish waters. Shore fishing and rock fishing are popular for pike, barbel and eel.

    Regulations

    • Fishing is regulated at the local level. Some areas require licenses for sea and shore fishing. Fishing licenses are available for 1 to 4 years, depending on the type of license. Licenses are free for retirees, disabled individuals and children under 14 years of age. Licensing and fishing information can be obtained from local town halls.

    Seasons

    • Fishing seasons are announced annually by regional authorities. The seasons may vary from year to year.
