How to Attach a Shock Tippet to a Bimini

The Bimini Twist is a popular knot among many offshore anglers. This knot provides a very strong double line loop that is ideal for attaching a length of shock tippet. The shock tippet will typically be a line that is a heavier pound test and is used to absorb much of the shock when a large saltwater game fish takes the bait. It is necessary to use a knot that is capable of withstanding the force of a fighting fish when attaching a shock tippet to the Bimini Twist.

Instructions

    • 1

Hold the Bimini Twist double loop in one hand and the shock tippet in the other. Feed 8 to 10 inches of the shock leader through the loop of the Bimini Twist.

    • 2

Hold your index finger between the loop of the Bimini Twist and the tippet. Keep your finger in this position to make sure a loop remains for later use.

    • 3

Wrap the end of the tippet around the double line of the Bimini loop. Make five or six turns around the doubled line.

    • 4

Turn the end of the tippet down and pass it through the loop you are holding in place with your finger. Feed the end of the tippet through in the opposite direction that the line begins to wrap around the doubled line of the Bimini Twist loop.

Pull the free end down and moisten the knot with saliva or water. Continue pulling the knot down until it is tight. Trim excess line from the free end of the shock tippet with a pair of sharp scissors.
