How to Keep Your Line Tight When Float Fishing

One of the main reasons fishermen fish with floats, also known as bobbers, is because they provide a visual indication when a fish bites. When the float shoots beneath the surface of the water, it is time to set the hook because the fish has the bait and hook in its mouth. But, some fishermen get into trouble when fishing with floats because they leave slack in their line. Then, when a fish bites and they try to set the hook, they cannot get a firm hook-set because the line is not tight.

Instructions

    • 1

Cast the float and baited hook into the area in which you are fishing. Make sure the bobber stands up straight.

    • 2

Reel in line until it causes the float to flip onto its side. Stop reeling. The float should right itself.

Check your line from time to time to make sure it is tight enough. To do so, pull your rod tip toward you. The float should fall onto its side. If it does not, your line is not tight enough. In that case, reel in until the float flips onto its side.
