How to Replace the Cable on a Walker Downrigger

Downrigger cables are subject to fraying and damage with regular use. The lines are under constant stress while fishing, and damage is typically incurred through contact with rocks and obstacles. Replacing Walker cables uses the same process as replacing other downrigger brand cables. The original cable must be removed in order to spool a new cable. The task is easier to accomplish by having several people help control the long cable. New cables often come with the required parts for spooling, but the parts are also available through hardware stores.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the brake on the downrigger. The brake is the lever that contacts the notches on the spool. Pull the brake off the spool. This allows the spool to rotate freely.

    • 2

Grab the end of the cable and begin pulling to rotate the spool and release the cable. Wind the material into a loop as you pull it off the spool. The cable will easily fold into the manageable loop position.

    • 3

Stop looping the cable when reaching the end. Pull on the cable to add tension on the spool, and cut the material off the spool with wire cutters. Throw away the old cable.

    • 4

Wrap the end of the new cable around the spool two times. Overlap the wraps to create a bite on the spool. Hold the cable end against the section of cable that connects to the temporary package spool. Wrap a wire crimp around the two sections, and pinch the crimp with pliers.

    • 5

Replace the brake lever on the downrigger. This prevents the new wire from slipping off the spool with tension.

    • 6

Place a screwdriver through the center hole on the temporary wire spool. Hold the screw driver and have a friend retrieve the wire by cranking the downrigger handle or pushing the electronic retrieve control.
