How to Jig for Yellowtail

When jigging for yellowtail, it is important to use a line that has a high test rate so that the fish doesn't get away with your jig. A test line of at least 15 lb. used with a drag reel will improve your chances of landing one of sport fishing's strongest game fish. Yellowtail often feed on squid and will choose only squid even when other options are available, so fishing with a squid jig can help land you a whopper.

Instructions

    • 1

Anchor your boat when the ocean depth reaches about 200 feet. Release the line on your rod until the jig reaches the bottom of the ocean.

    • 2

Point your rod at a 45-degree angle toward the ocean and then reel in the slack. Lift the rod up in the air 4 or 5 feet and then return it to the starting position.

    • 3

Repeat the jigging four or five times and then quickly reel in your line. The yellowtail will be able to swim faster than the speed in which you retrieve your line.

    • 4

Continue to reel once the fish has bitten the hook. Once the fish swims away from the boat, pull up and back on the rod to set the hook.
