How to Hook Up a Spawn Sack for Steelhead

Steelhead, which are sea-run versions of rainbow trout, are considered by many salmon and trout anglers to be one of fishing's ultimate prizes. The fish return to the streams in which they were spawned several times during their lives, and fishermen often target them in those streams. While some enjoy fishing for them with flies or other artificial baits, spawn sacks, like those used for other salmon and trout, are especially effective in coaxing a strike.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a piece of thread so it is five inches long.

    • 2

Set a piece of netting on a flat surface and put 10 trout or salmon eggs on top of it.

    • 3

Grab a corner of the netting with each hand. Pull the netting up and around the eggs. Pull it into a bunch above the eggs, and grabbed the bunched netting with one hand.

    • 4

Twist the bunched netting several times to tighten the netting around the eggs. The netting should be tight to the eggs, but not crush them.

    • 5

Grab the length of thread and wrap it five times around the bunch netting, just above the eggs.

    • 6

Tie a knot in the thread to secure it around the netting.

    • 7

Cut off any extra netting and thread.

    • 8

Insert the point of a size six or eight hook into the spawn sack. Push the hook point out the other side. The spawn sack should rest in the bend of the hook.
