Pop Up Hunting Blinds Vs. Ice Shelters for Ice Fishing
-
Hunting Blinds
-
Pop-up hunting blinds, also known as ground blinds or simply hunting blinds, are portable structures used for hunting wild animals. The "blind" nomenclature comes from the function the shelters serve as they make the hunter invisible to the animal being hunted. Most hunting blinds are camouflaged to blend in to forestlike terrain. In addition, hunting blinds are constructed using special screens that allow hunters to see out into the wilderness but anything outside the structure cannot see what is inside.
Ice Shelters
-
Ice shelters, also known as ice-fishing shanties, are portable shelters designed to set up and break down quickly. These shelters are built for use in inclement and cold weather with insulated walls and reinforced construction to withstand strong winds. Some shanties come with a floor, while others do not. However, both types are designed to attach to the slick ice surface with anchors that are included or available as an accessory. Another popular feature of ice shelters is heat.
Ice Fishing Basics
-
Ice fishing takes place on top of a frozen body of water. To access fish, you need to cut into the layer of ice and cast a line into the depths of the water. Unlike with traditional fishing, a rod isn't as vital in ice fishing, but at least a 10-pound fishing line and bait are. A tip-up is a useful tool that replaces a rod and alerts fishers when something catches the line. Naturally, the temperatures where ice fishing is popular require warm, insulated clothing.
Substitution Considerations
-
Pop-up hunting blinds are easily substituted ice shanties, as both accessories are built for portability and ease of setup. A blind provides some protection from the elements while you're ice-fishing. However, these structures are not optimized for cold weather and strong winds. Unlike ice shelters, blinds lack insulation against cold weather and don't attach to ice easily. If ice fishing is an activity you do not participate in regularly, a blind is a viable substitute in mild conditions. However, for frequent ice-fishing expenditures and comfort in a wider variety of cold-weather climates, an ice shelter will perform better.
