How to Adjust the Winding Shape on a Rear Drag Shimano Spinning Reel

Shimano was founded in 1921 with the production of a bicycle freewheel. It wasn't until 1970 when the company entered the fishing tackle market. Some models of their spinning reels offer an adjustable reel winding shape. Different types of fishing lines benefit from more forward or rearward winding shapes. To set the wind more to the front of the reel, reduce the number of washers on the spool shaft. To set the wind more to the back of the reel, add more washers on to the shaft.

      Push the button on the reel that releases the spooling assembly from the shaft.

      Remove the spool from the shaft by pulling it straight off with your hand.

      Slide a provided washer onto the end of the spool shaft to adjust the wind more to the back.

      Remove a washer from the spool shaft to adjust the wind more to the front.

      Push the spooling assembly back onto the spool shaft until it clicks into place.
