How to Tie Bass Diver Flies?

Bass diver fly patterns get the name from the motion the fly makes in the water. The bass diver moves up and down, going under the water as it moves after the cast. Like most fly patterns, bass divers are highly customizable, in color or size. Follow the basic pattern to make a bass diver and then modify with colors or sizes relevant to your river or lake.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert the hook into the vise so the curve faces down. Wrap the hook with the fly thread (just the shank).

    • 2

Place bucktail around the shank up to approximately 1/4 inch from the eyehook.

    • 3

Place six saddles around the shank and add strands of gold Mylar along the sides. Wrap thread around the tip of the saddles and Mylar to secure it to the fly.

    • 4

Cut a clump of deer hair to a width of approximately 1/4 inch. Place it around the eyehook on the fly. Wrap thread around the base to secure it to the fly.

    • 5

Spiral the thread along the bucktail to make it wavy along the sides.

    • 6

Fluff up the deer hair by stroking it in the opposite direction of the hair.

    • 7

Place the eyes on the side of the deer hair. Remove the fly and head out to test your luck with the bass.
