1
Assemble the fly rod blanks together that make up the rod. Lay the rod on a flat work surface.
-
2
Extend a tape measure along the length of the fly rod. Place the end of the tape measure so it is even with the tip of the fly rod.
-
3
Refer to a standard reference sheet for fly rod guide spacing. Determine the length of the rod to obtain the proper line guide spacing. For example, a 7- foot fly rod will have line guides spaced at 4.2, 9.25, 15.5, 22.25, 29.75, 38.25, 48.25 and 59 inches.
-
4
Mark the appropriate measurements on the fly rod blank with a wax pencil. Make the marks to the side of the blank rather than on the side where the guides will be installed.
-
5
Place the lower guide on the blank in the marked position. Secure the guide with a length of elastic thread to hold it in place and allow for adjustment. Line up the guide with the reel seat and glue the guide in place with quick set glue. Continue installing the remaining guides in the same manner so that they are all in alignment with the reel seat.
