DIY: Fly Fishing Reels

Fly reels are often set up with backing, line and leader by the dealer. Although this saves you time, you will not know how to replace the line or backing on your own. You can learn by watching the dealer spool the line, but it is helpful to have a guide for reference. The process does not require any special tools, but a nail knot tool and spool winder are helpful. The process can be completed in less than an hour.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the backing. Attach the backing to the spool, using an arbor knot. Run the tag end of the backing around the spool and tie a loose overhand knot. Tie another overhand knot in the tag end. Tighten the knots to secure the backing to the spool.

    • 2

Place the backing in a line winder or use a pen to create tension on the spool. Crank the reel until the backing covers roughly two-thirds of the spool diameter. Cut the backing to create a new tag end.

    • 3

Use a nail knot tool to connect the backing to the fly line. Make seven wraps around the tool with the backing and feed the tag end through the gap. Feed the fly line tag end through the gap in the opposite direction. Pull on the tag end of the backing to secure the knot to the fly line. Cut the tag ends close to the knot.

Place the fly line spool in the winder or use a pen to place tension on the line. Crank the reel until the entire fly line has been placed on the spool.

Locate the end of the fly line. It will have a built-in loop on the line. Use a loop-to-loop connection to connect the fly line and the leader. Slip the leader loop over the fly line loop. Feed the leader through the fly line loop until the two loops lock in place.
