1
Clamp the large streamer hook in the vise. Start the thread at the hook eye and wrap it forward one-half inch. Hold a set of dumbell eyes on top of the hook and make 20 figure-eight thread wraps to secure the eyes on the hook. Add a small drop of instant glue to the wraps to cement the eyes in place.
-
2
Measure a section of 30-pound backing to match four times the length of the hook shank. Hold one end of the backing at the dumbell eyes and wrap the thread from the eyes to the hook bend. Cover the backing with each thread wrap.
-
3
Feed the free end of the backing through the eye of the stinger hook. Hold the free end of the backing at the dumbbell eyes and wrap the thread from the bend to the eyes. Cover the backing with each wrap. Wrap the thread to a position between the eyes and eye of the hook.
-
4
Measure and cut a tan rabbit strip to match the distance between the two hook eyes. Measure and cut an olive and black barred rabbit strip to match the length of the tan strip. Hold the base of the olive strip at the hook eye and make 10 wraps to secure it on top of the shank. Hold the base of the tan strip on the bottom of the shank at the hook eye. Make 10 wraps to secure it in place.
-
5
Add a small drop of instant glue to the thread wraps at the hook eye. Allow the glue to dry and cut the thread spool off the hook. Remove the long hook from the vise and use wire cutters to remove the hook bend. Leave only the straight section of the hook shank.
-
6
Add a thin layer of instant glue to the hide of the tan rabbit strip. Press the olive hide against the tan hide with the backing pressed in the middle. Allow the glue to dry to complete the fly.
