How to Tie a Tippet to Furled Leaders

Furled leaders are constructed from woven monofilament, fluorocarbon or braided lines. The durable leaders are used by saltwater and freshwater fly anglers who do not enjoy changing leaders before every fishing trip. The furled leader uses a loop on each end to attach the fly line and tippet, and the woven strength of the leader makes them last through repeated abuse. Attaching a tippet to the furled leader requires a loop-to-loop connection. Either the tippet attached is tied directly to the fly or a second piece of tippet is added with an offset diameter.

      Attach the furled leader to the fly line with a loop-to-loop connection. Place the leader loop over the fly line loop and pull the remainder of the leader through the fly line loop. Pull on each line to tighten the connection.

      Cut a section of tippet from the tippet spool. Tie a perfection loop in one end of the tippet. Tie the loop by folding one end of the line to form a small loop. Make one wrap of line around the loop with the tag end. Make a second wrap between the loop and the initial wrap. Pull the line from the initial wrap through the loop to form a new loop. Continue pulling to tighten the knot. Clip the tag end of the line flush to the knot.

      Connect the tippet to the leader with a loop-to-loop connection. Slide the tippet loop over the leader loop. Pull the entire length of tippet through the leader loop. Pull on the leader and tippet to tighten the connection.

      Cut a smaller-diameter section tippet from a tippet spool. Attach the new tippet to the original tippet with a surgeon's knot. Overlap the ends of the tippet and fold them to form a loop. Pull the ends of each tippet through the loop to create an overhand knot. Repeat the process to form a double overhand knot. Pull on each end to tighten the knot.

      Continue adding smaller-diameter sections of tippet until you have reached the desired size and length. You are using the tippet to shape a custom leader based on your fishing needs.
