How to Mount an Alice Pack

The ALICE pack was used by U.S. soldiers and Marines from 1974 until the late 90s, when it was replaced by the MOLLE pack. ALICE is an acronym that stands for All-purpose Lightweight Individual Carrying Equipment. These packs are durable and can handle loads of over 75 pounds. As with all backpack systems, properly mounting the pack on your back is essential to comfort when trekking over long distances. If worn improperly, the pack can cause fatigue and possible injury.

Instructions

    • 1

Secure all outer pocket flaps with the provided buttons. Pull tight on each pocket retaining strap.

    • 2

Loosen the shoulder straps completely. Unbuckle the kidney belt, if so equipped. Note that not all ALICE packs have a kidney belt.

    • 3

Lift the pack up and set it on your knee. Slide one arm through the shoulder strap. Swing the pack onto your back.

    • 4

Lean forward, keeping your legs straight. Pull both shoulder straps down tight and simultaneously stand upright as you do. Buckle the kidney belt and tighten.

    • 5

Pull the upper back support straps forward. These are located above your shoulders on the pack. Tighten the sternum strap, if one is equipped.

    • 6

Walk around for a bit and swing your body back and forth. The pack should not shift from its position on your back if mounted correctly.
