What Do I Need When Trailing With My Baby in the United States?
-
Jogging Stroller
-
For trailing or hiking you're going to need a jogging stroller. The wheels are far bigger, giving you excellent ability to roll over most flat terrain regardless of grass, dirt, gravel or sand consistency. These strollers come with significant suspension similar to a mountain bike design and provide good comfort for your child while riding. The turning radius on jogging strollers works far better on tight trails, especially when you have to perform a sharp turn on a cutback turn. Just make sure to bring a small bike pump for the tires as well.
Good Shoes
-
Hike or trail with good hiking shoes or boots. The safety of your child in the jogging stroller depends on your ability to stand, walk and run without falling on a trail. Good shoes make a world of difference both in stability and comfort, especially on long hikes. A solid pair of hiking shoes will work as well in arid Arizona deserts as they will in the California Sierra.
Animal Repellant
-
There is the chance you can cross paths with wildlife anywhere in a natural park area. Many large U.S. parks are also wildlife preserves. The majority of animals stay clear of humans out of fear. But it's quite possible to surprise them. Always carry a pepper spray designed for animals in the area to repel them immediately if confronted. This will help protect you and your child from harm.
Backpack
-
Almost all mothers know to bring a bag with them to cover all the necessities of caring for a baby, and this need goes exponential when hiking a trail. Fathers need to get used to this practice as well if they are thinking about taking babies out on nature walks. A good backpack stocked for a baby will have at least three diapers, wipes, a medical kit, sun tan lotion of at least SPF 50, a hat, an easily folded blanket, a cell phone with satellite capability, a spare set of shorts or pants and lots of baby drinks and food.
