How to Make a Hand Strap for a Walking Stick

If you have a favorite walking stick and want to add a hand strap, do it yourself and make it just for you and your hands. Hand straps help keep the grip of the stick close to your hand and allows you to let go without dropping the stick. Materials such as nylon or neoprene make good strap material because they breathe and absorb any sweat or moisture off your hands or from rain and inclement elements.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Hold the walking stick as you would when hiking and walking. Hold the neoprene on the top of the walking stick and bring it over your hand. Mark where it connects with the stick over your hand and then cut it down to this length.

    • 2

Poke a hole approximately 1 inch up from the end of one side of the neoprene.

    • 3

Place the walking stick into a bench vise so the handle is horizontal to the ground. Mark where the neoprene connected at the stick over the hand and drill a 1/4-inch hole (or the diameter of your leather lace).

    • 4

Thread the leather lace through the hole in the neoprene and then through the hole in the walking stick. Tie it tight against the stick using a double-square knot.

    • 5

Place the free end of the neoprene on the top of the stick and tack it to the stick using a decorative brass brad.
