How to Weave an Eye in Rope

Braided rope is a strong style of rope which combines multiple smaller cords together into a single weave. Parachute cord is rated to hold 550 pounds of weight, making it ideal for use in rope braiding because of its durability and light weight. If you wish to include a loop in your woven rope, incorporating the weave directly into the weave of the rope is the strongest, most secure way to create a loop -- even more reliable than using a hitch.

Instructions

    • 1

Hold the three cords so their ends align. Tie an overhand knot with all three cords slightly off-center.

    • 2

Arrange the three ends hanging below the knot so that they hang side by side.

    • 3

Pass the left end over the center end to become the new center end.

    • 4

Pass the right end over the center end to become the new center end.

    • 5

Repeat the weave -- passing the left end over to center, then the right end over to center -- until you have braided enough rope to make your desired loop size.

    • 6

Untie the overhand knot in the cords.

    • 7

Fold the braided section so that the ends of the braid are aligned and the six cord ends hang down.

    • 8

Align the left-most cord from each end of the braid, the center hanging cords from each end and the right-most cord from each end of the braid, making three pairs of cords.

    • 9

Weave the pairs of cords the same way you wove the individual cords.

    • 10

Repeat until you have braided your desired length of rope or until you reach the ends of the cords.

    • 11

Cut off the ends of cord so they are an even length.

    • 12

Melt the ends of the cords with a lighter, then press on the melted ends with the side of the scissor blades. The ends will melt together, securing the rope together.
