How to Fill Canteens

Canteens are portable water bottles used for hydration while camping, hiking or serving in the military. To keep the canteen in good condition, curb bacteria and keep the contents tasting fresh, you should only use it for water and clean it regularly to remove mineral deposits.

Clean the canteen. Unscrew or pop off the canteen lid and drop in 1 tsp. powdered detergent. Hold the opening under a running faucet or fill a cup with water and pour the water into the opening, using a funnel if necessary. Replace the lid and wish the mixture around to clean the inside. If detergent is unavailable, use any non-toxic abrasive available, such as sand or dried rice.

Rinse the canteen until the water runs clear. If there is still heavy buildup inside, pour in a tablespoon of white vinegar and fill the canteen with water again. Let the solution sit for half an hour and rinse.

Fill the canteen with fresh drinking water. Hold the canteen's opening under a faucet or fill a cup with water and pour the water into the mouth of the canteen. If using water from a source not approved for drinking, treat the water with a purification tablet before pouring it into your canteen.
