How to Waterproof Saddlebags

If you have leather saddlebags, whether they are for a motorcycle or horse, you should waterproof them often to prevent damage to the leather. Even though you might try not to ride in the rain, you never know when you might get caught in the rain or be splashed when riding through an unavoidable puddle. Waterproofing your saddlebags will ensure that they last a long time.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a heavy leather wax or oil to apply to the leather. Both are good at waterproofing, but oils will generally soften the leather as well and make it more pliable.

    • 2

Wipe the bag off with a damp cloth to remove any dust or dirt.

    • 3

Use a cloth or shoe brush to apply a liberal amount of waterproofing substance to the leather.

    • 4

Work the product into every outer area of the bag and pay special attention to seams.

    • 5

Use a clean cloth to polish the bag and remove any excess wax or oil.

    • 6

Let the bags sit for six to eight hours before using them.
