If your saddle pad is too big, it will rub against your horse's sides while absorbing your horse's sweat, causing chaffing.       Measure the length of your saddle at its longest point.

      Measure the width of your saddle, not including the stirrup leathers, girth or cinch.

      Add four inches to the length and width. For example, if your saddle is 30" x 30", your saddle pad will be 34" x 34". Generally, you want two inches of saddle pad showing beneath the saddle.
