How to Build Your Own HK G3 Kit

The Heckler & Koch G3 rifle was developed during the 1950s and finally adopted into service in 1959 by the West German Army. This rifle is 7.62 caliber and has several variants ranging from short carbines to full-length assault rifles. HK G3 kits are available for purchase for those who wish to build their own G3 model. Kits generally include basic accessories that are installed on the G3 rifle. You can build your own G3 parts from scratch using a G3 diagram and knowledge of machine tools.

Instructions

    • 1

Scribe the dimensions of the parts you need to build on a piece of aluminum bar stock using a marker. Ensure that your measurements match the schematics of the G3.

    • 2

Set the mill to the needed angular settings to make your cuts. Run the aluminum block through the mill to machine the block to your needed dimensions.

    • 3

True up the cuts using a drum sander and rat-tail file. Measure all angles and dimensions using a dial caliper and micrometer. Ensure that the parts match the specifications as listed on the G3 parts schematics.

    • 4

Drill or tap any holes as needed for the parts, if they are to be fitted. Remove any burring from cutting and drilling using abrasive paper and lapping compound. Polish the parts to a high finish using a buffing wheel. Repeat the process for any other G3 parts you wish to make.
