How to Untangle a Ghillie Suit

Ghillie suits are full-body suits that are used for camouflage. They were originally used for hunting but now are used in the military as well. The suit has jute thread or other materials tied to it to break up the wearer's body shape outline and add texture that basic camouflage print lacks. Some ghillie suits have natural materials added to the jute thread, like leaves and branches. The jute threads will become tangled over time and expose areas of the suit. Untangle your suit occasionally to avoid this.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a large tub with warm water. Submerge your ghillie suit. The jute threads or burlap may have gotten tangled due to debris and dirt caught between the threads.

    • 2

Add a capful of laundry detergent to the water. Begin raking your fingers through the jute threads or burlap to remove twigs and leaves. Once the debris is removed, squeeze and release the ghillie suit against the side of the tub. This will remove dirt, clay and any other stick substance from the jute threads.

    • 3

Wring out the excess water from the ghillie suit and place on a clothesline to dry. If you do not have a clothesline, drape the suit over a shower pole or closet pole.

    • 4

Locate the large knots on the suit. Start at the bottom of the knots and gently pull at each thread. As the knot begins to untangle, work your way up it until you reach the netting of the suit. If you get stuck at any point, gently pull on strands a couple inches up to see if any budge. Pull the loose strands out of the knot and continue working from the bottom. Untangle all the large knots on your ghillie suit.

    • 5

Rake the suit with your fingers to locate and remove smaller tangles.

    • 6

Spray the untangled suit with flame retardant once it is completely dry. Jute thread is extremely flammable, and washing the ghillie suit removes the flame retardant from the manufacturer.
