1
Ask your local sheriff's office or police department to ensure the planned location of your skeet field is legal.
-
2
Locate your skeet field so you will be shooting in an area where animals or other people won't come into the line of fire. If you live in the country, practically any large field on your property will suffice. If you are closer to inhabited areas, first check your local zoning office for any potential zoning issues.
-
3
Drive a stake into the ground at the center of the skeet field with the hammer.
-
4
Tie the rope to the stake using just one foot of the rope to make the knot. Regulation skeet fields have a 63-foot radius.
-
5
Walk to the end of the rope, and place the first trap so that it will fire clay pigeons into the air, but away from any buildings.
-
6
Hold the rope and walk at its length to outline the perimeter of the semicircle while you spray the ground at your feet with marking spray paint. When you have reached the opposite side of the semicircle from the first trap, place the second trap.
-
7
Walk back along the line of the semicircle that you have outlined. At the halfway point between the two traps along the line you marked, mark a large "X." There will be four additional marks made along the line between the center "X" and the traps. These will segment the semicircle into even sixths. Each of the marks represents a shooting position. This completes the construction of the skeet shooting field.
