How to Make an Antler Plaque
There’s nothing like showing off the spoils of a successful deer hunt. If you can afford it, you’re going to trust your favorite taxidermist to mount the antlers because he or she is a professional. But mounting antlers isn’t as difficult a task as one might think; so if you’re a little strapped for money and handy with tools, you can always do it yourself. The enjoyment of constructing the mount will match the satisfaction you’ll get as you admire the finished product. Here’s how to make an antler plaque suitable for mounting your prized memory.

The color and grain of the wood is a matter of personal choice. Pick a piece of wood large enough to accommodate the top of the deer skull and antlers. An 8- by 10-inch piece is often sufficient.
-
2
Tracing your design on paper first saves from marking up the wood. Use pencil and paper to outline a design for your plaque, then trace it onto the wood.
-
3
A jigsaw is the best tool for cutting along your pattern's curves. Cut the pattern with a bandsaw or jigsaw.
-
4
A router works well for shaping and carving edges. Use sandpaper to smooth out the edges of the cuts. You can also use a router to make fancy edges.
-
5
Staining wood adds color and protects the wood. Paint on a stain or polyurethane to preserve the wood.
-
6
The finished wood makes an attractive plaque for mounting the antlers. Allow 24 to 48 hours to dry and your plaque will be ready for mounting antlers.
