How to Make Skate Blade Guards

Skate guards protect your blades from getting dull as you walk on hard surfaces. They also protect others from the sharp blades of your skates. You don’t need to be a master craftsman to make your own custom skate guards. Kitchen knives cut through plastic with difficulty, which is why hot knives are recommended to cut the plastic.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length, width and height of the skate blade, using a tape measure. Use the thickest parts of the skate for your measurements. For example, the skate blade has a length of 10 inches, width of ½ inch and height of 1 inch.

    • 2

Add 1 inch to the length of the blade and ½ inch to the width. Cut a 1-inch plastic sheet to the length of 11 inches, using a table saw. The piece is the plastic block.

    • 3

Position the hot knife ½ inch away from the end of the plastic block.

    • 4

Insert a hot knife into the end of the plastic block to a depth of 1 inch, using a hot knife and ½-inch hot knife bit.

    • 5

Pull the knife through the plastic block to a length of 10 inches. Stop ½ inch from the opposite end of the plastic block. Insert your skate blade into the skate guard.
