How to Accelerate on Ice Skates

Skating can be a lot of fun if you know how to do it. On the other hand, it can be quite painful if you keep falling. Accelerating is a basic necessity if you want to skate without the assistance of another person. The problem with accelerating in some cases is that the unseasoned skater will often fall to stop the motion. Learning to skate with a hockey stick or handle bars for support can help.

Instructions

Point your right skate straight in front of you. Angle your left skate 55 degrees towards your left and push hard against the ice with the tip of the blade. You will begin to move on your right skate.

    • 2

Bring your left knee about three inches from your right knee and then plant the skate two feet in front of you with the toe pointing straight ahead. At the same time, turn your right skate to a 55-degree angle and push off with the front tip of the blade.

Transfer the weight of your body with your arms rotating to the side from which you are pushing off. Bend your torso down to about a 45-degree angle and keep your head up.
