How to Prevent Rust on Skates

Ice skating is popular with many people, whether for exercise, for fun or as a world-class sport. Quality skate blades are most often made of chrome-plated carbon-steel. The metal is made as rust-resistant as possible, but it's still steel, and unprotected steel will rust. Given the metal, the ice, and the general wear-and-tear of skating, skate blades are susceptible to rust damage unless they are protected and cared for properly. Even a little rust can damage the blades, but using a few simple techniques you can prevent rust from forming on your skates.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Slide your fingers along both sides of the blade to remove any snow or ice. The oils on your fingers help to repel moisture.

    • 2

Dry the ice skates completely after you use them. Use a cloth, chamois or paper towels to completely remove any moisture or ice from all parts of the skates.

    • 3

Place a cloth blade cover on the blades. This helps to prevent rusting and chipping.

    • 4

Store the skates in a skate bag. Ice skaters use bags to protect the skates and keep the blades sharp. If you don't want to use a bag, keep the skates in a dry and cool place away from sunlight.
