How to Remove a Battery From a 2003 Seadoo GTX

The battery on the 2003 Sea-Doo GTX supplies all the vessel's power needs that gasoline does not. Recharged by the magneto, it provides the electrical service for the instruments, lights and for starting the engine. The removal and replacement process is different from that of an automobile because its battery caps are not vented like those of an automotive battery. Even so, removing or installing the battery in a 2003 Sea-Doo GTX requires a minimum of tools.

Instructions

  1. Removal

    • 1

Position the Sea-Doo so it is upright and level on a stable surface; using the Sea-Doo's trailer is acceptable as long as it won't tip.

    • 2

Grasp the back edge of the seat and squeeze the latch under the seat's back edge. Lift the seat from the Sea-Doo.

    • 3

Disconnect the nut on the negative battery post by using a 5/16-inch open-end wrench. Bend the negative cable out of the battery emplacement. Remove the nut on the positive battery post by using a 3/8-inch open end wrench. Bend the positive cable out of the battery emplacement.

    • 4

Slide the tips of a pair of needle-nose pliers under the end of the battery vent line -- the battery caps lack vent holes, like those of an automotive battery -- that's connected to the battery. Push up on the vent line to remove it from the battery's elbow-like vent nipple.

    • 5

Unhook the battery holding straps that hold the battery in its nook. Remove the straps from the battery emplacement to allow room to lift out the battery.

    • 6

Lift the battery straight up, without leaning it, to keep the electrolytes from running out of the vent nipple.

    Reinstallation

    • 7

Lower the battery straight down into the battery emplacement without tilting it. Hook the battery holding straps straight over the battery; don't cross them, and it doesn't matter which side you hook first.

    • 8

Push the vent tube onto the vent nipple until it comes to, but not over, the elbow.

    • 9

Apply a thin coat of dielectric grease to the battery posts and to the inside of the battery cable terminals. Connect the red positive cable to the post marked with a "+" sign. Connect the black negative cable to the post marked with a "-" sign.

    • 10

Snap the seat back into place.
