How to Cut a Hole in a Sea-Doo Mirror

Mirrors on a Sea-Doo, as those on any personal watercraft, provide an ideal launching pad for modifications on these craft. If you intend to add a watercraft audio system, add hooded mirror guards or put in specialized mirror inserts, you'll often need to start with drilling a hole in the mirror. Having the right tools and, more importantly, some key know-how makes the difference between ending up with a neatly drilled hole in your mirror and a cracked, useless mirror.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket set or wrenches
  • Plastic foam piece, such as Styrofoam, a little bigger than the mirror
  • Masking tape
  • Marker
  • Electric drill
  • Carbide drill bit
  • Fine-grit sandpaper
  • Soft cloth
  • Glass cleaner

Instructions

  1. Accessing the Mirror

    • 1

      Open the hood of the Sea-Doo. Look opposite the mirror for the bolts that hold the mirror housing in place.

      Unbolt the mirror housing from the body of the Sea-Doo by using your socket set or wrench.

      Turn the housing over and locate the bolts that hold the mirror in place within the housing unit.

      Unbolt the mirror from the housing. Use your wrench or socket set to delicately free the mirror.

    Drilling the hole

      Place the Sea-Doo mirror on the plastic foam. This will act as your brace and cushion for the next steps.

      Adhere two layers of masking tape over the area where you want to drill the hole in the mirror.

      Place a dot, with your marker, over the desired hole location on the mirror.

      Attach a carbide bit of the desired diameter to the electric drill. The drill can be plug in or battery-operated.

      Line up the tip of the bit with the marker dot and, starting slowly, drill the hole in the mirror. Use gentle but steady pressure on the drill. Withdraw the bit carefully once the hole is complete.

    After Drilling

      Leave the masking tape in place while you use the fine-grit sandpaper to smooth the edges of the mirror's hole. Once smooth, remove the tape.

      Dampen the soft cloth with glass cleaner. Wipe away any debris, tape residue or fingerprints from the mirror.

      Bolt the mirror back into the housing.

      Bolt the housing back onto the Sea-Doo.
