Read the instruction manual and the warning labels on the WaveRunner. The information contained in these documents inform you of actions to avoid and what to expect while riding. Also, review your state laws since boat safety laws vary from state to state. Make sure you've satisfied all state requirements to operate a jet ski.
-
2
Wear a personal floatation device, or life vest, before operating your WaveRunner. Most states require jet ski operators to wear a PFD as a matter of safety.
-
3
Attach the safety key line to your left hand. Afterward, attach the line to your WaveRunner. The WaveRunner does not start until you attach the safety key. This key -- or "kill switch" -- stops the WaveRunner automatically if detached.
-
4
Place your feet flatly on the WaveRunner and press the green start key near the throttle. After the engine starts and you allow it to warm up, turn the throttle forward to increase power. Look around you to ensure no boats, swimmers or other obstructions are blocking your way.
-
5
Keep your hand on the throttle during turns. Relieving the throttle makes it nearly impossible to turn. Add more throttle for sharp turns and reduce speed for wide turns.
-
6
Avoid shallow waters while riding. Areas with less than 2 feet of water increase the likelihood of hitting an underwater obstruction with your WaveRunner. You may get debris caught in your engine.
-
7
Check the water around you on a regular basis so you remain aware of your surroundings. When you stay focused only on what lies ahead, you may get tunnel vision. This phenomenon prevents the operator from seeing possible hazards on the periphery and behind him. Do not zig-zag near power boats or sailboats. Do not cross directly in front or immediately behind other vessels. Give unpowered vessels such as a canoe or kayak a wide berth. You are responsible for your wake.
