How to Handle a Kayak

For kayakers, paddling and steering the kayak is only one part of the boat skills necessary. Long hauls, carries and portages are routine in kayaking and they require some basic handling skills. Because kayaks are lengthy and heavy, handling the boat means learning the center of gravity and balance of the craft. Different materials used to make the kayak dictate how to handle the kayak as well. Learn the basics to prevent damage to your precious craft.

Instructions

  1. Shoulder Solo Lift

    • 1

Pivot the kayak on the ground so it is on its side, exposing the cockpit. Bend at your knees down to the kayak.

    • 2

Position your shoulder to the inside of the cockpit and stand up with the other arm reaching up and around the kayak hull. Use your knees to stand and gently lift the kayak up so the cockpit rests on your shoulder with the opposite hand as the stabilizer.

    • 3

Walk slowly with the kayak bow facing forward and the kayak perpendicular to your torso. Bend at the knees to lower the kayak down and then "slide" it off your shoulder when done carrying.

    Beach Slide

    • 4

Grip the front carrying toggle on the kayak. Stand to one side of the kayak.

    • 5

Lift the front of the kayak up and walk forward, dragging the back of the kayak while walking up the beach.

    • 6

Use this technique only with plastic roto-molded kayaks.

    Two-Person Carry

    • 7

Stand on one side of the front of the kayak and have your partner stand on the opposite side at the stern. Each person should grip the carrying toggles on their end of the craft.

    • 8

Bend at the knees and count three to lift the kayak. Keep the kayak at waist height and walk to your destination.

    • 9

Count three and lower the kayak to the ground.
