How to Ship a Kayak Overseas

Kayaking overseas is an opportunity that any enthusiast would embrace. Taking a weekend road trip and strapping a kayak to a car or loading it into a truck is quite different from having to lug it overseas. In some cases, simply "check" it and have it fly with the other passenger cargo. Make note that this is not always a viable option and shipping the kayak overseas separately may be a better route.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the kayak's width, length and depth. Write the kayak's dimensions down on a sheet of paper. Also, if possible, weigh the kayak. Do this by setting it nose down on a large scale.

    • 2

Select a freight shipping company. There are many to choose from such as Freight Quote, Pilot Air and Forward Air. Package handling services such as FedEx, UPS and the United State's Postal Service typically do not ship such large items.

    • 3

Phone different freight services to obtain shipping quotes. Give the representative the kayak's dimensions, weight and destination. Take into account the shipping container and ask for price quotes on shipping materials necessary to transport the kayak overseas.

    • 4

Arrange for pick up of the kayak or alternatively, drop it off at the freight company to save money. Schedule a date and time for pick up or drop-off. Obtain a tracking number from the shipping company.
