How to Clean Your Kayak

Kayaks accumulate debris, grime buildup and microbes on the bottom and sides of the boat from sitting in shallow water, traveling through polluted bodies of water and from being docked outdoors, open to the weather elements. You can rinse down your kayak with warm water after each use and clean it with a warm water and soap mixture once a month to maintain it. You can use a UV spray to defend your kayak from ultraviolet rays and can store it indoors to decrease potential damage and fading.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove all equipment from inside of the kayak. Unplug the drain from the floor of the kayak and let any standing water drain. Rinse the kayak with a hose to remove dirt and grime.

    • 2

Create a warm water soap mixture. You can use car soap or dish detergent for soap. Dip your sponge into the mixture and scrub all interior surfaces including cracks and crevices where insects and dirt infest.

    • 3

Spray the hose up and down the interior to rinse it out. Wipe the inside down with towels.

    • 4

Turn your kayak upside down and prop it on top of a kayak stand or furniture to dry and so you can gain access to the bottom of the kayak.

    • 5

Clean the bottom of the kayak with water and soap mixture and a sponge. Start on the hull and work your way around the entire exterior. Scrub all cracks and crevices to remove dirt and pests. Rinse your kayak with the hose. Dry it off with a towel and allow it to dry on the stand for up to two hours.

    • 6

Apply a coat of UV protective spray to the exterior of the kayak once the kayak is dry.
