What Do People Wear When They Go Kayaking?

When dressing for a kayaking trip, the most important thing to remember is that you will get wet. Checking the local weather, tides and water temperature can also help determine proper attire and ensure you'll stay cool and comfortable during your adventure. In addition, a personal flotation device, or life vest, should always be worn when you're out on the water.
  1. Check the Weather

    • If it is going to be raining, you'll want a protective hood and completely waterproof or water-resistant attire. If it is going to be hot and sunny, you'll want a visor and sunglasses to protect your eyes from the glare off the water.

    Research the Tides

    • If tides are running against the winds, you could be in for a very choppy ride. An outgoing tide combined with strong winds can make returning to the shore more difficult. Since this may lead to a longer outing, make sure to bring extra layers, water and snacks.

    Determine Water Temperature

    • For cold-water kayaking (water below 60 degrees Fahrenheit), you'll want to protect your body by layering. Start with thermal underwear, add an insulating pant and mock-neck top. Quick-dry fabrics are best. Your outermost layer should be a windproof, waterproof and breathable paddling jacket.

    Warm-Water Kayaking

    • For warm-water kayaking (water above 60 degrees), a bathing suit is acceptable. Remember a fleece top or windbreaker in case the weather changes. Apply sunscreen, and don't forget a retainer strap for your sunglasses so that you don't lose them.

    Add a Life Vest

    • Today, life vests designed for kayaking are available at outdoor outfitting stores. These vests are available in both the typical vest style as well as pullover style. Make sure your life vest allows for good freedom of movement so you can paddle without restrictions. It may take a few wears until your life vest is broken in and completely comfortable.
