1
Set the cleat on the deck of the kayak where you want it mounted. Check the angles, and make sure it is in the exact position you wish it before drilling any holes. Measure three times to be certain of the placement. Once satisfied, mark the deck cleat screw holes on the deck.

2
Drill out the deck cleat holes on the kayak deck. For roto-molded plastic kayaks, drill slowly but with pressure. Do not go too fast as the friction causes the plastic to melt. Kevlar and fiberglass kayaks require a fine bit used for metal.
-
3
Wipe off any stray strands or debris from the holes. Align the cleat over the holes and insert stainless steel bolts into the holes. Squirt a small amount of the caulk into the holes with the bolts in them before attaching the washers and nuts.
-
4
Attach the washers and nuts and tighten the bolts, securing the cleat.
-
5
Apply caulk over the bolt head, and at the washer and nut to seal the drilled holes -- eliminating any small gaps or leaks.
