How to Secure a Kayak to a Soft-Top Jeep

Attaching a kayak to a soft-top jeep may seem like a challenging task, as it requires you to affix a potentially heavy and dense boat onto a cloth car roof. Indeed, the results can become dangerous if you don't take the time to learn the basics and perform the job correctly. Fortunately, the process will prove less difficult than it sounds if you carry out some key precautions.

Instructions

    • 1

Place one of your kayak blocks on each beam arching over the Jeep, on top of the actual soft top lining.

    • 2

Place the kayak over the top of the jeep, resting it upside down and in the folds of the kayak blocks; if possible, have someone help you. Take care not to pinch or drop the kayak on limbs or appendages.

    • 3

Pass the buckle straps through the notch holes on both the front and rear of the kayak. Pass them through the front and rear windows to meet the opposite ends of the straps on the other side of the car.

    • 4

Pressing down on the buttons allowing more strap to pass through, tighten the straps; pull them as tight as possible by hand. Once you have secured each strap, give it a good tug or two to test the security of the attachment.
