How to Sail a Hobie Kayak

There are two kinds of Hobie kayaks: the Mirage line and the regular line. The Mirage line has a pedal system that works a specially designed set of underwater fins to drastically increase the speed of the boat. It also allows you to get a better body workout, since you work your legs on the pedals and your arms on the paddle.

Instructions

  1. Standard Line

    • 1

Drag the kayak into the water and board it carefully.

    • 2

Position yourself comfortably in the kayak. Shifting weight once you are under way can cause you to capsize, so it is safer to adjust yourself at the dock or on shore.

    • 3

Hold the paddle evenly in both hands.

    • 4

Dip the paddle into the water on one side, pull backward and lift the paddle up. As you lift one side, the other side should dip into the water.

    • 5

Propel yourself forward by alternating sides, being careful to use equal force on each side.

    Mirage Line

    • 6

Follow the directions for the standard kayak or steer with the hand controls on either side of you.

    • 7

Unlock the foot pedals in the bay in front of your legs.

    • 8

Place your feet on the pedals and pedal like a bicycle to propel yourself forward.

    • 9

Return the pedals to the center position and lock them in place if you want to continue to use your kayak like a standard kayak without foot propulsion.
