1
Cut a length of 550 nylon cord with a pair of scissors. Determine the length that the leash will need to be so that it can comfortably be used on the kayak. The goal is to have a leash that will attach to the crate or kayak at one end and a fishing rod or oar on the other with enough leash to use the items comfortably. Add 12 to 16 inches to the estimated length to allow for an attachment loop and knot tying.

2
Press the spring tension button on the cord keeper and slide onto one end of the cord. Pull at least 1 foot of cord through the keeper. Slide the bead onto the cord. Thread the end of the cord back through the keeper the same way it went through originally.

3
Tie an overhand knot in the end of the cord and seal the end with the flame of a lighter or match. Hold the flame several inches below the nylon and allow the material to slowly melt and seal the end to prevent unraveling.
-
4
Attach a nylon snap to the opposite end of the 550 cord length. Use a Figure Eight Follow Through knot to attach the snap or hook to the line. Use a nylon hook such as one those found on a backpack. The hook may be readily purchased at most home improvement stores.
-
5
Seal the end of the line once again with the flame from a match or lighter. Attach the nylon hook to the crate and use the adjustable loop to secure fishing rods, paddles, nets and other gear.
