How to Build Your Own Kayak Roof Rack

A kayak roof rack can cost anywhere from $50 to $500. If you don't use your kayak often and don’t plan to drive with it on the interstate, you can save some money by making your own roof rack from an old boogie board. This is an affordable solution that requires little expertise. Kayak rental companies use the same material for their own kayak roof racks.

Instructions

    • 1

Use the measuring tape and measure two strips from the boogie board that are about 21 inches by 6 inches.

    • 2

Cut the boogie board into strips using the hacksaw.

    • 3

Place the strips on the roof of your vehicle. Place one strip toward the front of the roof, close to the windshield. Place the other toward the back of the roof.

    • 4

Lift the kayak with the hull facing up and lay it onto the roof of the car. The foam pads will protect the kayak and the car from getting scratched up.

    • 5

Secure the kayak with the tie-down straps. Run the straps through the front scupper holes, the holes in the kayak that bail out water. Run the strap through the vehicle. Secure it by pressing the cam buckle button and running the strap through the buckle until it's tight.

Repeat step five to secure the rear, this time running a strap through the back scupper holes.
