Kayak Storage Tips

Kayaking is both a physically demanding and relaxing sport that you can enjoy year-round. If you decide to store your kayak for an extended period of time or simply want to ensure that you have properly placed your kayak before its next use, there are a few important overarching tips you should follow.
  1. Maintenance and Repair Before Storing

    • The simplest thing you can do for your kayak is wash it between uses. This is especially important if you kayak in ocean or saltwater lakes. Rinse the kayak with fresh water and mild dish soap. Make sure to fully clean the cockpit, the area in which you sit when you kayak. Once clean, inspect the kayak for any damage. If you notice large cracks that are leaking, obtain a kayak repair kit to fix the damage. Allow the kayak to dry completely before making any repairs.

    Short-Term Storage and Placement

    • If you are simply storing the kayak for a short time period, which you believe is under a couple of weeks, you do not need to hang the kayak. You can learn more details about kayak hanging below. Always store your kayak inside. Sunlight will dry and crack the surface of the kayak, making it more prone to damage and it will shorten your kayak's lifespan. A common means of short-term storage for your kayak is standing it up vertically. This saves space and allows for the water in the cockpit to drain out of its drainage holes. Do not stand the kayak vertically for long periods of time since it may fall over. Storage racks are ideal for short-term storage.

    Using Racks and Long-Term Storage

    • According to EmotionKayaks.com, a kayak producer, long-term storage requires that you follow a simple principle. Avoid applying pressure to the bottom of your kayak that will warp or misshape the kayak's underside. To avoid doing this, store your kayak on its side, upside down or hang the kayak horizontally. If you decide to hang the kayak horizontally, make sure that you wrap straps near the kayak's "cockpit." Doing so will ensure that you do not cause the kayak's side to become curved. Also avoid hanging the kayak from its drainage holes or handles. Finally, do not hang the kayak with its underside facing toward the ground. Additionally, if cost is not as much of a concern for you, purchase a hanging system from your local sports store or kayak dealer.
