How to Modify Otter Kayaks

Otter kayaks are recreational open cockpit watercraft made by Old Town Canoes. Otter kayaks are wide and short, giving them a highly stable platform for paddling. Adding accessories to the kayak lets you modify to your personal needs or paddling preferences. Aftermarket accessories are available to provide a larger or softer seat, more flotation and stability, or even wind propulsion.

Instructions

Install a set of inflatable sponsons to the sides of the Otter kayak. Inflatable sponsons attach to the kayak via screw-on brackets and plastic quick clips. These sponsons provide extra stability for those who may not like the tipping sensation kayaks have.

Use sea socks for dry storage in the kayak as well as for extra ballast. A sea sock is a large dry bag that fits under the kayak deck inside the hull. The air bladder gives extra buoyancy and you have extra dry storage space inside the sacks.

Choose a softer or higher seat back for a personal feel and fit in the kayak cockpit. Seats are available through Old Town or aftermarket accessory makers.

Attach and use a small kayak kite to give a wind-based power source for the kayak. These small kites attach to the deck bungee and are deployed during high winds. Give your arms a rest and let the wind propel you through the water.
