How to Convert Vertical Dropouts to Horizontal

Dropouts are slots on a bicycle frame that support the rear wheel axle. Some are cut directly into the frame -- these cannot be changed -- while others are removable and can be replaced if they get bent or damaged. They can come in many different configurations or angles, depending on the bike's geometry. Most dropouts are vertical, or at a slight angle. This allows for easy tire changing when you have a flat, but can also be the weakest link because the wheel can come loose if not properly tightened. You can install horizontal dropouts on your bike using new dropouts designed to fit your bike.

Instructions

    • 1

Flip the bike upside down and balance it on its handlebars and seat. Remove the rear wheel.

    • 2

Unscrew and remove two 8mm hex setscrews located beside the slot where the axle came out with an 8mm hex wrench. They may be at the top or the side of the slot and are the biggest setscrews on the frame; you can't miss them. Do the left and right sides of the frame.

    • 3

Grab the dropout with your fingers, it will be a plate approximately 2 inches square or slightly rectangular. Rock it back and forth until it pops out. If it is stuck, use a screwdriver to pry it loose and then remove it. Do both sides.

    • 4

Scrape off any debris, grime or dirt from the dropout housing where the old ones came out. Use a screwdriver or sharp stick. Wipe it clean with a cloth dampened with light penetrating oil.

Place the horizontal dropout in the dropout housing. Insert the setscrews in the holes and tighten securely with a 8mm hex wrench. Do both sides. Put the wheel back on and tighten.
