Choose your campsite strategically. Avoid chigger bites when you choose a campsite that is away from the shade, moisture and thickly wooded areas. Reduce your chances of suffering chigger bites by placing your tent in an area that receives ample amounts of direct sunlight and has good air circulation.

Test the area around your campsite for chigger infestations. Chiggers typically congregate in "mite islands." One particular area may be infested with chiggers while another area just a few feet away may be completely clear. Place several 1-inch squares of black construction paper, on top of the grass, around your campsite. If there are chiggers present in that specific area, you will notice tiny yellow or pink insects collect on top of the paper. Spray the areas where you find chigger infestations with outdoor repellents such as diazinon, carbaryl or chlorpyrifos.

Wear protective clothing. Although no clothing can protect you completely from chigger bites, some clothing pieces will give you added protection. Put on long pants made of tersely woven materials. Tuck them into your socks for added protection. Wear knee-high boots over the socks for additional protection. Put on long sleeve shirts made of materials that are difficult to penetrate.

Use insect repellents. Before you hike into wooded, wet, or low-lying areas, apply insect repellent to your clothing. Try repellents that contain the active ingredients deet or permethrin. Apply the repellent directly to your skin in the areas that are not covered by clothing. This includes your hands and neck. Reapply your insect repellent every couple of hours to repel chiggers most effectively.

Keep moving. Chigger bites are more likely to happen while you are sitting or standing still. Move quickly through wooded, wet and low-lying areas and any other areas that you suspect may be infested with chiggers.
