How to Make a Coyote Howler

Coyotes are known for howling and crying during the night. If you hunt coyotes or are drawn to them for photo or wildlife watching purposes, use a howler call to draw them in close. The howler call imitates the noises and chortles made by coyotes during their vocalizations. Making your own howler saves money and the end result helps bring the coyotes closer to you for your purposes.

Instructions

    • 1

Grip one end of the PVC tube with the vise grips so the grip tips are holding the tube from the inside of the PVC. Draw a line starting about two-thirds the length of the tube, at a slope from the center, down to the opposite end from the vise grips. Draw the same angled line on the other side of the tube.

    • 2

Clamp the PVC tube to a work bench and use the hacksaw to cut out the drawn lines, leaving you with a sloped angle from the tube with a full round end.

    • 3

Sand down the cut edges of the PVC tube. Smooth them down as best as possible.

    • 4

Slide the saxophone reed into the center of the tube so it rests over the sloped cuts and is in the main body of the tube by at least 1/2 inch. Wrap two rubber bands around the reed where it enters the PVC main tube so the reed is secured to the caller.

    • 5

Hold the round PVC tube to your mouth, blow and make a low throat noise. Practice making the coyote call via the howler.
