How to Convert a Backpack to a Roll

They key to rolling a backpack is how you fill it. All of the items in the pack must be properly prepared and inserted into the backpack before it can be rolled up. There must also be adequate strapping on the backpack. Many backpack designs already have the straps in place for this purpose. Look for backpacks with straps and buckles for the best in backpacks that will roll up. Other rigid frame designs will not roll up at all.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove everything from the backpack. Loosen two straps on the backpack, one on each side. Don't loosen the straps that go over your shoulders, there should be two axillary straps on either side of the backpack. Those are the ones you need to loosen by pulling one end loose from the buckle.

    • 2

Roll up towels, clothes or anything pliable into cylinders. Roll up plastic-sealed food items, spare plastic, tarps and anything that can be rolled.

    • 3

Insert all of the rolled-up items horizontally into the backpack. If they are short, place two of them together, end to end. Use all of the available pockets and spaces, and don't double up items whenever possible.

    • 4

Insert food items such as cans end to end horizontally. Insert shoes end to end horizontally. Insert everything in positions so that one will fold over the top of the next when you begin rolling the backpack.

    • 5

Roll the backpack toward the center from each end. The straps on the bottom of the pack pack need to remain in the center of the back pack -- don't roll them up. These straps are for your shoulders. Use your knee to compress everything as tight as possible.

Pull both loose straps as hard as you can while you compress the backpack with your knee. Insert the straps back through the buckles. When the backpack is as tight as you can get it, clamp the buckles closed.
