1
Buy the proper safety gear. Appropriate boots for riding an ATV will cover your ankles. Wear goggles made for off-road sports, not other types of eye wear such as safety glasses. The difference between these types of eye protection is that the former usually has a layer of foam on the back of the goggles. Always wear a helmet that protects your head and covers your entire face. Wear clothing that covers your entire body. Wearing the appropriate gear cuts the chances of you being seriously injured in a wreck.

2
Turn by leaning your whole body as well as using the steering wheel. This method is referred to as SOS and is taught by professional ATV driving instructors. SOS stands for Seat Off Saddle, a reminder to riders to actually lift off the saddle and lean in the direction they are turning. This changes the center of gravity for the vehicle and cuts down on the risk of flipping the ATV. Shift in whatever direction you are driving, leaning forward when going uphill and sideways when turning.

Properly maintain your ATV. If you do not practice regular maintenance on your vehicle, then it will not function as well and may become a hazard. Clean the air filter regularly. Cleaning the air filter is a practice that can be necessary every time that the vehicle is used depending on the environment. Not cleaning the filter can seriously damage the engine by allowing dirt past the filter. Change the oil often. Always drain the old oil first, disposing of it properly.
